History of Mallow Day Care Centre

A public meeting was organised in Mallow at the Mercy Centre on the 9th of December 1996.  From this meeting a direction-finding committee was set up and from this and subsequent meetings a new organisational committee was set up in the name of MDCC

From March 3rd 1998, meetings were held weekly.  In the last two years meetings were held monthly.  From the start, aims of the committee were two pronged - fund raising and to develop a Day Centre that would meet the needs of seniors in Mallow and outlying areas.

Planning permission for the Centre was granted in the summer of 1999.  Parallel with this, fund raising was commenced immediately.  Charitable status was applied for and the committee became a PLC.

On June 10th 1999, President Mary MacAleese visited the site and turned the sod for the proposed building, it was a wonderful and inspiring day for all involved.

The Day Care Centre opened to the public by Mary MacAleese on March 13th 2000 with June O'Connell appointed as Nurse Manager.

On Friday October 13th 2001 Minister of Health and Children, Michael Martin officially opened Mallow Day Care Centre.  This was the culmination of the aims of the committee.  Mallow Day Care Centre continues to cater for the needs of the older person in the Mallow community.
